Some of the most useful VFX tech of the last two years isn't generative at all — it's reconstructive. Techniques like NeRFs and 3D Gaussian Splatting turn a set of ordinary photos or video into a photoreal, navigable 3D scene. For brand and location work, that quietly changes what's possible.
What it actually is
Instead of modelling a location by hand, you capture it — a walk-around with a camera — and a neural process reconstructs it as a 3D scene you can move a virtual camera through, with real light and detail baked in. Splatting has made this fast enough and clean enough to be production-useful, not just a research demo.
Why it matters for brand films
Capture a showroom, a factory floor, a real street or a finished apartment once, and you can shoot it again and again — new angles, new camera moves, new lighting — without going back. It's a natural fit for real-estate walkthroughs, retail environments, and any campaign that wants a real place with the flexibility of CG.
The practical limits
Reconstructions love static, well-lit, richly-textured spaces and struggle with moving subjects, reflective surfaces and thin geometry. Capture quality determines everything downstream, so the shoot day still matters. Used on the right space, though, the result is a photoreal set you own and can revisit at will.
The bottom line
Splatting and NeRFs give you the realism of a location with the reusability of a 3D asset. For brands with a real space worth showing — a store, a site, a product environment — capturing it once as a navigable scene can feed an entire campaign.
